Tokyo Designers Week (TDW) is an international design event that gathers excellent architecture, interior, product design, graphic design and art from all over the world. It celebrates its 29th anniversary this year.

TOKYO DESIGNERS WEEK 2014 was held this year around 4 main themes: Design, Art, Fashion, Music in Tokyo from Oct. 25th (Sat) – Nov. 3rd (Mon). TDW is dedicated to spreading everyone’s design and everyone’s art.

I have been particularly interested in researching about this exhibition, called Fragments of “Now” – Reflections of the Immediate Past.

This beautiful project installs a new kind of mirror that reflects the moment of “now.” A series of mirrors simultaneously reflect glimpses of passing time, counting back from ”now,” to n seconds into the past. The shifting reflections question the observer and his connection to the present moment.

Concept (official description):

Just as we are unconscious of our own body temperatures or breathing, we, as human beings, tend to forget how the current moment is part of a constant flow of time. This is because we assume “now” as an unquestionable premise.

However, by exposing ourselves to the counterparts of our attention, we can gain a wider awareness and tap into our unconsciousness. When we travel to high altitudes with thin air, we become aware of our own breathing. When we touch another person, the difference between our body temperatures allows us to feel the heat of our own bodies. The contrasting counterparts are what enable us to objectively embrace matters that we unconsciously take for granted.

This project installs a new kind of mirror that reflects the moment of “now.” A series of mirrors simultaneously reflect glimpses of passing time, counting back from ”now,” to n seconds into the past. The shifting reflections question the observer and his connection to the present moment.
